This is a small, relatively untouched by tourists city. The easy route from Viang Vieng or Luang Prubang has only fairly recently opened and there are many guesthouses being opened, so i suppose that will change with time. The main reason to go there is to see the Plain of Jars - literally 3 different Plains, full of stone jars! They are pretty weird but worth the visit. If you go in or after the wet season there are lots of waterfalls to see in the area, but as the wet season has only just begun (with a vengance!!) there was little point in these trips. The city only has 2 restaurants in the centre - both good and the guesthouses were cheap, and basic! Lots of nice mountains around but there are many warnings of landmines that put me off walking there.
