Potosi - the world's highest city at 4,100 meters. I am really chasing records on this trip. And what is my reward? Half a day of complete darkness!
I was forced to visit the cooperative mines in the Cerro Rico mountain this morning and believe me this place has less space to move than the tiniest sty.
At one point we even have to climb up an almost vertical narrow "trail" to reach a couple of miners.
I really admire these guys. They are working under really hard and unhealthy conditions in this altitude, sometimes only using pickaxes and shovels in their quest for silver and minerals - working conditions from the colonial times when the Spaniards sent the first people into the mountain.
Of course, you develop strange habits in such an environment: The miners sacrifice to devil statues and they only drink pure alcohol during their fiesta because they believe that alcohol mixtures or less percentage would make them find only mineral mixtures of less quality.
I made it back out! Eeeyak and toodaloo,
