Can't say that they didn't warn me! But still, getting up at 5 am on a Sunday is not fun! At least not for little pigs!
And they didn't want to believe me when I said there would be no traffic, so we headed out west and ended up sitting in the car waiting for the parking lot to open because we got there a lot sooner than expected ...
Oh, maybe I should tell you what our mystery destination was! We went to the NJ Festival of Ballooning at Solberg Airport in Readington, NJ!
It always starts on a Friday afternoon and ends on Sunday evening. They have all kinds of shows for kids and grown-ups, music etc. but the main attraction are the hot air balloons. I didn't count them but there were quite a few of them! They are launched once on Friday and twice on both Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting!), always at 6:30 (am and pm) ... at least that's what they tell you ...
So by 6 am we were sitting in our folding chairs (the built-in cup holders make pretty good piggy seats!) right behind the fence waiting for the show to start ... I dozed off but I think it was after 7 when the first balloons finally took off. And, boy, all of a sudden there were thousands of people all around us! I hadn't seen them coming because I'd been dreaming of lots of balloons, all shaped like pigs ... So when the real balloons took off, one after another, I was waiting for a piggy balloon and guess what - they did not have one!!! What a shame! They didn't have very many special shape balloons this time at all but my favorite was the Purple People Eater! That one looked really cool! Unfortunately, there's no picture with both the balloon and myself :-(
I learned from Andrea and Stephan (who were a bit disappointed) that two years ago, there was a polar bear, an ice cream cone, an eagle and a space shuttle balloon, among others. Why they weren't there this time I don't know.
After the balloon launch we put the chairs back into the car and walked the grounds a bit. Since it was still early, many of the booths hadn't opened yet, so after maybe another hour we headed back home.
We all agreed that next time we get close to a hot air balloon, we want to go for a ride in it!
