Guanella Pass is a road...well a trail really...classified as a "Scenic and Historic Byway". It's a really a 23 mile long pot-hole laden snowbank...but the views are breathtaking. The website says that the road is maintained for passenger vehicles...but we wouldn't have tried it if we didn't have 4-wheel drive...(I like my truck...)...
The pass is an old wagon route that linked the silver-mining towns of Grant and Georgetown, which boomed during the 1860s. The pass winds up above timberline, with the highest point at 11,666 feet.
Surprisingly we didn't see much wildlife on the pass, but as we were driving there we saw a herd of bighorn sheep on the mountainside.
