This little piggy went to the Big Apple again – or should I rather say the Big Orange??? Because these days, New York is completely under the spell of lots of orange fabric – “The Gates” in Central Park.
This morning, despite the freezing cold, we took the train and then the Subway to get to the park to see this ‘art installation’ or whatever you want to call it. I’m not so sure about the art part but it certainly looked beautiful! I don’t think it would be as spectacular on a gray or rainy day but today the weather was fantastic and the orange – or ‘saffron-colored’, as some people prefer to call them – gates and the blue sky made for a great combination.
There are a total of 7500 gates in the park, spread out over 37 kilometers (23 miles) of walkways – and my goal for today was to see them all … well, let’s just say I underestimated the distance a bit … my legs are so short, I think it would have taken me a week to do it … and I got dizzy from looking up at all the orange … So in the end we ‘only’ walked from 96th street to the south end of the park (59th) and then back to Penn Station on 34th – not quite 37 k's but not bad, right?!
But I’m getting ahead of myself – I wanted to tell you that there were quite a few people in the park with long sticks, topped with tennis balls, which in the beginning confused me quite a bit. When I saw what they did with the sticks, it suddenly all made sense … Part of their job is to put the fabric panels back where they belong should they get wrapped around the horizontal bars at the top when the wind is very strong. But I guess they spend most of their time answering the questions of the tens of thousands of visitors … and once in a while they hand out fabric samples … and guess what, it took me a while but I got one, too! Not sure what I’m going to do with it, it’s a bit on the smallish side, not quite big enough to make a piggy sweater out of it …
Well, I’m so tired from all the walking, I’m almost falling asleep at the keyboard, so let me just say if you want to see “The Gates”, hurry up, they’ll only be around for another week!
