Today I made it inside the Denver Capitol ! I’ve been here before but the building is only open for tours during the weekdays. It was worth the wait. I highly recommend taking the guided tour. The capitol building was built in the 1890's. The Colorado State Capitol Building is best known for its brilliant dome, covered with 200 ounces of 24K gold leaf, which was completed in 1908. The gold plated dome commemorates Colorado's Gold Rush days, and the early pioneers and miners who helped build the state. However, the really priceless material is the Colorado rose onyx that was used inside as wainscoting. The entire known world’s supply of this unusual rose-colored stone was used in the building and no more of it has ever been found. Historic tours usually include early Colorado history, the gold dome, and a stop outside the Senate and House of Representatives' chambers. We had a special treat the day of our visit. A local school choir group serenaded us as we walked around the building.
There is an ongoing debate over whether the 18th or 15th step to the entrance places one exactly a mile high.
