Mike, Tara, and Piggy hoped in Big Red (the pickup truck) and started our cross-country road trip! We’ll be traveling through eight states from Virginia to Colorado.
Here is our first stop in White Sulphur Springs, WV. It’s the Greenbrier Hotel – which is a tourist stop for more than just a place to rest your tired hooves. The Greenbrier is a grand old hotel which was first built in 1778. The hotel itself is the destination with plenty to keep everyone busy from golf to tennis to a spa.
Of course it's most recent claim to fame is being home to the U.S. Government Relocation Facility, commonly known as the Bunker. The Bunker was secretly built into the hillside under the Greenbrier to be used by the US Congress in case of an attack. It was completed in 1961 and was 112,544 square feet. It had everything from dormitories to accommodate 1,100 people to decontamination chambers, operating room, storage chambers, and TV production area. Although there were always rumors about its existence – it was finally “revealed” in the 1990s.
The hotel offers 90 minute tours of the facility.
