We flew down from Cairns to Brisbane, then caught the bus up to Hervey Bay. We had a day to mooch around Hervey Bay until we went over to Fraser Island. There's not an awful lot to do here, the highlight was watching the thousands of fruit bats flying over the bay at night (that sort of shows what sort of place Hervey Bay is).
Our trip to Fraser Island though was excellent. We did a 3 day, 2 night trip (with a company called The Fraser Island Company). The island is the worlds largest sand island, and is absolutely beautiful, we had plenty of time to swim in freshwater lakes and creeks, do a bit of wildlife spotting (saw dingoes, sharks and rays), and generally had a really relaxing time. The group we travelled with were great fun and the guide, Mick, was very knowledgeable (and a good cook!).
We said a sad farewell to Columbus, who was handed over to a Canadian girl called Karen, who is travelling around Australia.
We've had a fantastic time in Australia, but it's back to the bad weather in England tomorrow.
